Plans for 2011!

New Species!

We are cutting back on our Hahn's Macaws, and other New World species and focusing more on the Poicephalus birds. To that end, we are planning to offer Red-Bellieds, Orange vested Senegals, and Meyers Parrots as well as Timneh Greys in 2010-2011.

A bit about us.

When I decided to finally step into breeding by myself, I wanted to produce those birds I loved the best; Conures, Mini-Macaws, Caiques and African Greys. These species bring such joy into our lives as cherished pets and companions!  As time passed, we moved more into Poicephalus birds because they outright stole our hearts with their loyalty, their affection and just being a total joy to own!

I wanted to keep our breeding program small, so we can make sure our breeders get individual attention as needed, and we can give a lot more hands-on time with the small amount of babies we breed. The key, as we all know, is to socialize a baby to be strong, confident and happy so when it grows up, it will retain those behavioral traits and be the same as an adult. One of the methods we use with baby rearing is to use adult pet birds as role models for the youngsters. We get the best of both worlds doing this. The baby learns to love humans and learn to be well-behaved birds BY birds themselves! I feel this makes a better pet in the end than just socializing with humans or raised strictly by parent birds.

All of our breeders are treated as members of our family and a good amount of them are pets themselves. I don’t believe that there should be this strict “stay away from breeders or the won’t breed!’ nonsense. Because, it is nonsense! I refuse to sneak out in the middle of the night with night vision goggles on just to feed these birds. I refuse to wrap their cages in black cloth to make them feel ‘secure’ enough to breed. I refuse to keep their cages tiny and not give them toys so they’ll only focus on breeding. These aren’t egg machines to me, they’re members of my family. My tame birds breed quite readily and most accept co-parenting of their chicks! Not all, but most. Of course, there are some breeders of ours who would rather be left alone and we respect that. They still get toys and everything they need, but we keep our intrusion to a minimum.

We're a family run business and have 3 generations here with us - the humans, that is. My mother, father, myself and my daughter all work in our aviary. That allows our birds to get used to all ages and genders of humans so they don't lock onto a specific gender or age as a favorite.

Our Philosophy:

Our aviary is closed, and sadly we cannot invite prospective owners of our babies to visit them. This is for the health and safety of our babies and breeders! It would be heart-wrenching if someone inadvertently brought in a disease on their shoes or shirt and got our birds sick! We also do not bring in new birds unless they have gone through an extensive quarantine and are vet checked thoroughly by an Avian certified veterinarian. We do not attend bird marts or shows with our birds, and we don't buy our supplies in a local pet shop where birds are housed.

We want to offer the most to our buyers so they can have the best chance to bond with a happy, healthy and socialized baby. We abundance wean our babies on what the adults get; fresh fruits and vegetables, sometimes a bit of pasta or beans for protein and lots of fresh, sprouts for important phyto-nutrients! We feed all of our breeders quality Roudybush and Zupreem pellets 24/7 so they always have some food to munch on and a small amount of Bird Paradise blend with nuts and fruits which are in this exceptional mix. We wean our babies on a mix of Harrisons, Roudybush, and Zupreem brand pellets so they're used to a pelleted diet from the get go. We do not believe parrots should have a primarily seed diet and seeds are offered only sprouted or as a very small percentage of their daily diet.

If you purchase a baby from us, we will keep in contact throughout its growth and weaning. We'll offer weekly email updates with pictures of your baby as it grows. We even web-stream when we can, so you can watch your baby while it’s still in the brooder. Your baby will be socialized and handled daily and taught to step up before you get it. We believe in allowing our babies to master flight before we trim its wings, so it remains confident, secure and agile.  We actually hate trimming the wings, but we prefer to do it rather than have you get it done. It’s your option, of course.

Unlike a lot of bigger breeders, we will be happy to offer 'after the sale' advice so you will be able to rest assured that help is there if you need it. We also suggest new bird owners to join a forum like birdboard.com. You'll find a lot of excellent advice and it's a great way to show off your new bird, and meet new friends!
